Monday, March 21, 2011

Two French people were arrested Monday at a Ukrainian border crossing for attempting to bring two babies illegally out of Ukraine. Border police said the babies, twin girls, aged two months old, were found in a camping van unconsciuos, having been drugged with sleeping pills.

Police found the twins in the van at a crossing between Ukraine and Hungary.
They had been hidden by their biological father and his father who said they were bringing the children to France to get them passports, something they thought could not be done in Ukraine.
The twins were born of a surrogate mother in Ukraine, where the practice has been legal since 2004. It is illegal in France and in many other European countries.
The two men are being detained and investigated for illegally transporting people across the border. The twins are in a stable condition after being brought to a local hospital.
